Problem-Based Learning
Unlock curiosity. Develop real-world problem-solvers.
Every K–8 student at High Plains engages in at least two Problem-Based Learning (PBL) experiences per year, deeply rooted in our STEAM curriculum. PBL empowers students to:
- Investigate real-world challenges
- Collaborate with peers and community experts
- Apply knowledge in science, art, engineering, and math
- Communicate findings through presentations, prototypes, and performances
Why PBL Matters
Problem-Based Learning fosters essential 21st-century skills:
- Critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving
- Collaboration, communication, and self-directed learning
- Flexibility, resilience, and intrinsic motivation
By engaging in meaningful work connected to their community, students gain confidence, empathy, and a sense of purpose.

Making Changes to the City
In 2023, our Kindergarteners presented to the Loveland Transportation Advisory Board and Loveland City Council to advocate for safe routes. As a result we now have new signage and crossings for students who walk, ride and roll to school!
Making Changes to the State
In 2024, our 4th Graders wrote letters to legislators and presented them to Senator Marchman to help pass Hands-free Driving laws.
Sending an Experiment to the ISS
On November 4, 2025, our 8th grade team had their experiment The Impact on Capsicum annuum’s Life Cycle after Germination in Microgravity launch to the International Space Station. Here is the team after its return inspection and harvest.
