Art and Visual Design
Intro to Art (1st Semester)
The purpose of this course is to provide a balanced visual arts program, which guides students to achieve the standards in the visual arts. Introduction to Art provides a foundation of visual arts knowledge and skills and their connections to other subjects, and explores the discipline in depth both intellectually and experientially. This art curriculum is a perfect introduction to drawing, painting, mixed media, sculpture, clay, mixed media, and digital art.Students learn art theory concepts such as the elements of art, principles of design, typography, composition, and color theory.
Ceramics and Sculpture (1st Semester)
In the sculpture class students will be working with different types of media to create a number of creative art pieces. Sculpting is a great way to explore creativity while teaching the eye how to interpret 3 dimensional shapes and understand scale & proportion.This course also provides an introductory exposure to the history of ceramics and a beginning level experience in the use of clay as a fine art medium. Handbuilding techniques, surface development and glazing, and kiln firing practices will be introduced. Both the functional and sculptural ceramic traditions will be explored. A curious mind, a strong work ethic, and a desire to experiment and create are qualities that will lead to success in this class.
Independent Study (2nd Semester)
In this course, student projects will be choiced based on the art curriculum menu provided. Students will explore and experiment with a variety of materials and methods used to create art. There will be a minimum of 6 “mini” skills based projects assigned based around an art theme, four research assignments, two W.O.W finished projects (medium and methods used are student choice), and two artist statements completed during the semester.
Digital Media (2nd Semester)
In this middle school Digital Media art class, students will explore creativity using modern design tools like Canva, Pixlr, and Inkscape. Students will learn how to create digital posters, edit photos, design logos, and build original artwork using layers, typography, color theory, and composition. This class combines artistic skills with technology, helping students become confident creators in today’s digital world.
Yearbook (First 3 quarters)
Yearbook is journalistic in nature and allows students to participate in the production of the school yearbook. Students in this course are required to learn layout design; write and fit copy, captions, and headlines; learn basic photography skills; and should be proficient on a computer. Individual responsibility is essential toward completion of assignments for deadlines. Students will also have the opportunity to accept leadership positions and develop new skills as they build the yearbook. Some outside of school time will be required for taking pictures of after school events, distribution and completion. You must enroll in the class for quarters 1, 2, and 3.
